4-hour job fair for military veterans and their families Thursday at the Superdome

NEW ORLEANS — A job fair for veterans is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at the Superdome.

It's free, but job seekers and employers must pre-register at http://www.uschamber.com/veterans/events, by clicking on New Orleans link and filling out the form.

The military-to-civilian recruiting firm RecruitMilitary says nearly 700 job-seekers and 37 exhibitors had signed up by Wednesday. They included 276 soldiers, 157 sailors, 91 airmen, 89 Marines, 33 Coast Guardsmen, 32 spouses and seven others.

The job fair is part of a program created by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. It is sponsored by RecruitMilitary and New Orleans-based Entergy Corp.

Entergy says in a news release that the event targets all unemployed veterans but focuses on those who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Gary Taylor, the president of utility operations at Entergy, said the corporation believes businesses of all sizes have a duty to recruit men and women who, in his words, "have made such extraordinary sacrifices for our country."

Taylor said much of Entergy's success in the nuclear power field is due to Navy veterans with nuclear experience.

On Friday, the American Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division will have a free legal clinic at VFW Post 8973 to explain veterans' disability and pension benefits and help complete the required forms.
