Hi and thanks for accecpting me as a non-member today. I have been considering starting my own small business. I have been out of work for quite some time. Now with twins in high school and college costs being what they are, I want to try and earn some extra money. It is a very scarey thought to go out on my own, but my family stands beside me. I will be opening up an Arts Studio. Teaching arts and crafts to any age. With a focus on the environment and upcycling. About half of my supplies come from my recycle bins.

1. Instead of getting financing from the bank I am trying to get friends and family to donate to my start up costs. I will pay them back with services (classes) or art work from my studio.

2. I've also thought of negotating with my "landlord" for a reduced monthly rent rate for at least 3-5 months. I feel I need that long to evaluate if my business is going to take off or flop.

Has any one ever tried either one of these plans? Can you share your experiences with me. Ideas and or suggestions will be well appreciated.
