Center for Women in Business
The U.S. Chamber’s Center for Women in Business (CWB) was formed with the goal of promoting and empowering women business leaders to achieve their personal and professional goals by:
- Increasing opportunities for women to serve on corporate boards and in the C-suite
- Mentoring women at all stages of their careers
- Building a network for women entrepreneurs to encourage peer-to-peer networking, education, and professional growth.
Women-owned businesses are thriving as important economic contributors in the U.S. and abroad. Between 1997 and 2013, the number of women-owned firms is growing at 1½ times the national averagee, according to the American Express OPEN State of Women-Owned Businesses Report for 2013.
But women-owned businesses face challenges: as these firms grow larger they tend to start to fall behind in terms of growth and progress.
CWB is committed to supporting entrepreneurship, with events and online resources, and by sharing the stories of successful women entrepreneurs.
Research shows that the best indicator of a woman’s success is her network. To this end, CWB seeks to help women in all stages of their careers build their professional network, share ideas and experiences, and gain insight on their personal and professional goals.
One of the best ways to build a network and gain insight on one's goals is to have a mentor or be a mentor.
Young professionals find mentoring helpful in learning what options are available to them and how to navigate career advancement. And accomplished women find that mentoring is rewarding – and an opportunity for continued learning.

It's easy to tell women that they should strive to hold leadership positions at companies or start their own businesses—it’s preaching to the choir. But the fact remains that only 4% of CEO positions at Fortune 500 companies are held by women.

Advancing Women to the Top is CWB's second report. We focus on the state of women’s leadership and the business imperative for maximizing the potential of women across industries and organizations.
Women in Leadership
Women in Leadership was CWB’s first report, released in 2012. CWB worked with Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business to examine women’s participation and compensation in the top management ranks of S&P small-cap 600, S&P mid-cap 400, and S&P large-cap 500 companies.
